In Portugal, the average share of renewable energy in electricity production has reached 61 per cent, thanks in no small part to hydroelectric power plants as well as wind and photovoltaic plants.

The portal Energetyka24.com cites statistics from the Portuguese government, which show that RES is responsible for producing 61 per cent of the country’s electricity needs. From January to July 2023, green capacity in Portugal produced more than 29,000 GWh of electricity. The largest part of this volume, 40 per cent, is generated by hydroelectric power plants.

According to government assumptions, RES will account for as much as 85 per cent of energy production by 2030. However, in the current year, the best month in this respect was April, when 91 per cent of power was generated by RES, of which 48 per cent was produced by hydroelectric power plants, 30 per cent by wind farms and 7 per cent by photovoltaic panels.

Although the development of hydroelectric power plants does not seem to be an optimal solution in Polish conditions, the direction taken by Portugal is most worthy of emulation.
