In Poland, we don’t yet have the capacity generated by offshore wind power, but we are on a very good path to achieve it. Despite some perturbations in the offshore wind market, Polish investments in the Baltic are going according to plan. Investors are ensuring that the 2024 plan will be met, which means that the assumed schedule for connecting the first offshore wind farms to the grid is not at risk. As a result, the energy transition on the Vistula will be able to significantly accelerate.

Electricity from offshore wind farms – when will we use it?

All investors implementing offshore projects in Polish Baltic waters unanimously admit that their timely implementation is not a threat – despite the fact that the wind energy industry is still struggling due to the economic consequences of first the COVID-19 pandemic and then the war in Ukraine. At the same time, Polish wind power projects are at varying degrees of progress. Despite this, the power produced by offshore , is expected to flow into our sockets in 2026, so this is a prospect of the not too distant future. On the other hand, more offshore wind power projects are expected to be commissioned starting in 2027.

Offshore goes according to plan

The 1.2 GW Baltic Power offshore wind farm that Orlen is building with Canadian company Northland Power is expected to be completed in about two years. The investor already has a set of necessary approvals and permits, and has also secured the funds necessary for the project and its technological components. In the current year, according to businessinsider.com.pl, the investor plans, among other things, to continue the necessary onshore work. Meanwhile, the other builder, PGE, in the next few months intends to, among other things, finalize the contract for the construction of the connection infrastructure to the farm and obtain the final investment decision. In turn, Polenergia, which is developing the Baltic II and Baltic III farms, among others, plans to receive construction permits this year and sign the most important contracts for their implementation.
